Dublin Castle is at the historic core of Dublin. In fact, the city gets its name from the Black Pool harbour, or Dubhlinn, which occupies the site of the present Castle Gardens. The Upper Castle Yard today corresponds closely with the almost rectangular castle established by King John in 1204 AD.
The Castle remained in continuous occupation, was adapted to suit changing requirements and functioned as the seat of English colonial rule and the centre of military, political and social affairs. In 1922, it was the location of the handover to the new Irish State. |
